In New Day and Reflection 2 (cat. 44), Riley explores the plasticity of color, that is, its potential to create space and depth through the juxtaposition of hues. Vertical bands are bisected by diagonals to create a “colour-form,” Riley explains, “opening up an interior space, as it were, so that there [is] a layered shallow depth.”
